Skis S'Cool
Skis S'Cool is a learn to ski program designed for Yukon elementary schools.
Who Can Participate?
All elementary schools in Whitehorse and Yukon rural communities are eligible to participate in the Ski S'Cool program.
The program focuses on grade one students and in some situations grade two students.
Whitehorse Schools
For Whitehorse Schools, the ski lesson program will have two different formats.
The first format involves students traveling to the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club located at Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre. Schools will arrange their own transportation and Cross Country Yukon will provide ski equipment and a certified coach to conduct the lessons.
The second format is a traveling ski lesson package in which the school would provide the trails / playground on site and Cross Country Yukon will bring the ski equipment and the coach to the school.
Rural Schools
For Rural Schools, the ski program will have one format.
A traveling ski lesson package in which the school would provide the trails / playground on site and Cross Country Yukon will bring the ski equipment and the coach to the school.
Location
The lessons will take place either at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club or at your school. Your school will need to arrange for grooming of your trails or arrange for a ski-able area for the lessons such as a field.
Ski Equipment For Students
Skis and boots are supplied by Cross Country Yukon (poles are not required at the introductory level). However, students can bring their own equipment, but it should be up to the same standard as the Cross Country Yukon equipment.
Supervision
Cross Country Yukon will provide a certified instructor for the lessons (depending on class size). The school will supply chaperones / teachers for the lessons based on a ration of 10 participants to 1 chaperone. Older students (grade 6) who are experienced skiers may be suitable as supervisors i.e. Green Squad with Cross Country Yukon race program.
Transportation
Schools are responsible for transporting students to the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club.
Fees
- 4 session program - $20 / student
- 5 session program - $25 / student
- 6 session program - $30 / student
The ski lesson program instructors will be paid by Cross Country Yukon. The ski equipment is the property of Cross Country Yukon and was purchased with support from Lotteries Yukon. Fees charged are to help offset some of the costs incurred by Cross Country Yukon.
